A LITTLE HISTORY
The oldest serving Regiment in the British Army, it was formed
on August 13, 1650 under the name of
'Monck's Regiment of Foot'. The regiment fought as part of Oliver Cromwell's
'New Model Army'. By 1660, Cromwell had been dead for two years and political
unrest was common. Colonel Monck and his 'Coldstreamers' were largely responsible
for securing the free elections for a new Parliament, which resulted in the
return of King Charles II to the Throne.
- In 1661, the regiment was asked to take up arms in the name
of the King, but refused to take the title of the 2nd King's Guard,
taking instead The MOTTO "Nulli Secundus", (Second to None)
and the name Coldstream Guards.
- Coldstream Guardsmen are of the finest of men who have
served King, Queen and Country continuously for nearly 350 years".
Did you Know . . .
- The Coldstream Guards wear a red Plume on the right side
of their bearskin caps.
- Their Tunic & Cuff buttons are spaced in pairs.
- A garter star is worn on the collar, while a rose appears
on soldiers' epaulettes.
- The forage cap band is white, hence the Regiment's nickname
'The Lily-whites'.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
This section is a "Look for an old Guardsman friend, relative, or mate" and here we try to put Coldstreamers in touch with each other again.
